Consultation & Supervision
If you are a mental health provider who is contemplating how you want to handle insurance in your practice, wants to know more about helping your clients seek out of network reimbursement for their care, or are at your wits end trying to resolve complicated claims issues, I can help. I offer consultation for providers (licensed or pre-licensed) who would like to receive one on one guidance regarding insurance credentialing and billing for in network and out of network services.
I opened my practice 9 years ago with very limited understanding of insurance benefits, what it meant to be in network or out of network, and not knowing any of the billing codes. I had previously worked in community mental health agencies where I learned about documentation requirements for billable services but had no experience billing on my own. I learned by spending late nights filling out credentialing applications, reading CPT code descriptions, and later correcting claims. Through much trial and error, I learned a lot about how to spot and prevent complications before they occur as well as correcting errors when they do occur. I would like to make that process easier for you.
To put it bluntly, I am not a fan of corporate capitalism. I am not aligned with commercial insurance companies or their values. I do, however, approach working with insurance as an access to care issue. Until we have universal healthcare, many of our clients depend on being able to use their insurance benefits to access healthcare. I decided to learn as much as I could about the insurance billing process to ensure that I was getting paid for the work I did, as well as make my services available to people that might not have the means to pay out of pocket. I think of each insurance challenge as a puzzle or a game that sometimes feels stacked against clients and small practices, but one that I am determined solve.
Topics that I can assist with:
Insurance credentialing/contracting for a solo practice
Understanding eligibility and benefits
Commonly billed CPT codes for behavioral health
Claim submission and (gulp!) correcting rejected or denied claims
What services are typically covered vs those that aren’t
Documentation requirements typically required by insurance
Telehealth
Dual coverage
How to recognize and avoid complications before they occur (plan exceptions, self-funded plans, carve-out plans)
Insurance Consultation
As a self-taught solo provider, my skills would be most suited for those in independent practice, however I may have insights that would be beneficial for those in group practices as well. I would be happy to schedule a phone call to discuss your needs prior to scheduling a consultation session. If I believe that your questions are out of my scope, I will provide referral resources. My fee for consultation is $150/hr or increments of 30 minutes ($80) and 15 minutes ($40). Small-group rates available upon request. To schedule a consultation, please reach out to me via email.
Supervision
I am pleased to offer supervision to LPC and LMFT interns who are pursuing licensure in the state of Oregon. I currently offer individual sessions with the hope of offering additional small-group supervision if enough interest is shown. Currently, all supervision is provided via secure audio/visual platform, however I plan to make in-person supervision available beginning in June.
When I think back on my own training, I am deeply grateful for the amazing supervisors I had. These professionals helped me develop my clinical insight, challenged me to explore my counter-transference, and helped me develop my therapeutic rapport, sometimes under very intense circumstances. They taught me how to trust my gut while also teaching me how to document my clinical rationale. They taught me to have confidence in myself as a therapist. They were directive when I needed them to be while also allowing me to find my own relational style. They taught me to find my strengths in places I might not have thought of looking.
I have worked in the mental health field for 20 years now and would like to provide for others what has been so helpful in my own development as a therapist. I am licensed as in LPC in Oregon, however a significant portion of my training and experiences was as an MFT intern working with children and family systems. I have received the training required to supervise clinical hours for both LPC and LMFT. I have worked in a variety of settings, including schools, residential treatment, community mental health agencies, mobile crisis, and home-based services. I currently work in private practice. I have five years’ experience providing crisis intervention including suicide assessment and stabilization and self-injurious behaviors. As a bilingual therapist, I have worked with individuals and families from a variety of cultural backgrounds which guides my exploration of cultural and systemic factors that impact clients. As the family member of several transgender individuals, I’m passionate about providing affirming and inclusive care, including support for family members adapt to the gender expression of a loved one. I identify my specialties to include children and family systems, perinatal mental health, and trauma. I frequently use attachment-based interventions, CBT, structural family therapy, and EMDR.
I am passionate about increasing access to care to marginalized populations by accepting commercial and OHP insurance. With that in mind, I aim to support my supervisees with providing authentic therapeutic connections, ethical practice, and solid clinical care that is also reimbursable by insurance. While you might choose not to work with insurance directly, this knowledge can be beneficial should you work for an employer who does, or have clients who would like to seek reimbursement for their out of network care.
My fees for supervision are $150/hr or $200 for 90 minutes. My hourly fee for group supervision (minimum of three participants) is $70.
Reduced fee is available for BIPoC or trans clinicians and those employed full-time in community mental health.
